Defenders works directly with landowners, including ranchers and farmers to find innovative solutions to conserve imperiled species while ensuring continued use of their lands.

Incentives for Conservation

Much of the habitat needed to conserve biodiversity is on private land. Property owners across the country want to find ways to conserve wildlife and habitat on the lands they own and manage. Many landowners voluntarily undertake conservation efforts, and many more might if they get appropriate encouragement and assistance through government incentive programs.

Agriculture and Conservation

Forty percent of threatened and endangered species are found only on private or state lands. That makes agricultural land incredibly important for conservation efforts. Farmers and ranchers all across America are participating in programs to restore wetlands, protect habitat, conserve natural resources, and reduce agricultural runoff.

Living Lands

Living Lands is a new Defenders of Wildlife project to increase the capacity of local land trusts to protect, enhance and restore native wildlife habitat and biodiversity. The project assists local land trusts in making strategic decisions about: where to work to conserve high priority native habitats and species, and how to work to use effective land stewardship to restore and manage native habitats for their long-term benefits.

Habitat Conservation Plans

Habitat conservation plans, mandated by the Endangered Species Act, are popular agreements that private landowners develop to manage endangered species on their property. Many are not providing adequate protection measures for the endangered species they cover. Recognizing the importance of conservation efforts on private lands, Defenders has become both supporter and critic of the plans.
